The Club’s Guest Speaker was Senior Constable Darren Palk, who along with Police colleague Kate Johnson works at the PCYC as case workers.
Michael Jones, the Manager was unable to attend due to last minute family commitment.
Darren outlined the work of The PCYC and the impact they have in the community, especially with the Youth of the Illawarra.
The PCYC has taken over the running of the Twilight Tournaments on a Friday night. Buses pick up young people who are at a “loose end” (and probably up to mischief!!) and engage them in sporting activities, educational and “Life skills” workshops, and provides them with a delicious nutritious meal.
Many Club Members may not know that the PCYC concept was an initiative of Rotary back in 1936, and there are now 60 clubs in NSW.
The long standing partnership is greatly appreciated. Sporting activities include boxing, weight lifting, gymnastics, archery , ballet body classes , just to name a few
Darren and Kate conduct tutoring programs during the school terms, and in fact have initiated a Breakfast Program Club hanging out with the Youth, especially in High Risks trouble areas like Bellambi.
The PCYC is currently involved in the “Green Light Movement”, a learn to drive mentor program for young people aged 16-24yrs.
Having knowing Darren for many years, and along with Kate and Michael Jones, we can be proud of the work they are doing at the PCYC.
